Yo! I'm the Director ( ˙▿˙ )/
Director's Ramble ٩(ˊ〇ˋ*)و
What Software was used?
ToonBoom Harmony, Procreate, Procreate Dreams, Clip Studio, Blender & After Effects
What inspired the film?
I had a weird dream that I saw the world end when two huge satellite-like objects crashed into each other in the sky... Immediately after, I saw rapid flashes of humanity's history throughout time...Then I woke up! I thought to myself, 'What the heck did that mean??' I held onto that moment where I felt confused on what my dream was trying to tell me or what it was trying to represent. ( I think I was just stressed ╮( ̄_ ̄)╭ )
What's with all the Japanese imagery then?
To be honest, I'm not too sure why. My brain just led me in the direction of the graphic design style of old Japanese magazines and the inclusion of real life photography from films like Mind Game and A Girl, She Is 100%. I like to play around with various artstyles and media, so I wanted to explore more Japanese artwork and styles.
- For the Boxing sequence I referenced old magazines.
- The TV sequence was heavily inspired by the artist duo AC-bu, who are known for their crazy animations.
- The puppet sequence is based on Ukiyo-E art that I mixed with Fauvism.
Overall, I sat through a bunch of Japanese commericals willingly... I did have a tiny phase when I was younger where I would just watch Japanese ads for the love of it.
Where do you get your ideas from?
For this project I wanted to prioritize having fun and improvisation. So alot of this film was created by spontaneous ideation and streams of consciousness thinking which influenced what would happen next. It is really just me going 'Wouldn't it be funny if this happened?'. I don't really control what pops up in my head... I just see scenes play out randomly in no particular order and scribble them down as thumbnails!
Also I just like to watch mix of random/ weird things as well so that might be influencing me subconsciously...
